Monument

Why do we get so used to people dying? When an acquaintance died we just say, “This person died, do you know that? Like it was just some casual news. Maybe it has something to do with the Covid-19 deaths, seeing thousands of people dying every day on the news made us numb to hearing such deaths. Of course we don’t know them that deep for us to grieve or mourn them but it feels wrong to just casually talk about their death. When someone you barely knew died, the emotion you feel is a little confusing. Should I just say RIP and move on?

Someone I barely knew died and when I heard about it, I was shocked for a moment and whilst everyone are talking about the family he left, I kept wondering. One day you are just buying your food somewhere, having a blissful day and then the next day, you are no longer here on earth. One day you were the greatest, the smartest maybe, maybe even the bravest to the people around you and then one fateful day, you leave, grieved for a number of years and then the world kept going on. Not everyone’s blessed to be given a monument after they die, not everyone had contributed something to the world before they die, and not everyone will never be forgotten.

It never strikes me how much people are dead since the world begun until today, maybe I forgot about them or simply didn’t care enough, after all, how can we even forget someone we haven’t really known? But what’s their story? Did they have a purpose or have they found any meaning in this life before they died? I think we should all at least be given that gift to find one’s meaning before we die. If we died and left forgotten, never given a monument then at least we found meaning in our death, even if other people didn’t.

It is incredibly unfathomable how a hundred or so years from now, all humans, right at this exact moment (March 30, 2021|2:15 AM) are all probably dead and forgotten, and yet we think we are so special and that we are what everything this world is about. Do we ever think about the future we will leave to the next batch of people who will suffer in this world? I have no idea what a hundred years from now will look like or if earth will even reach that point but I just wish that they will remember our deaths, be it heroic or mundane. What am I thinking? That’s too much to ask, silly me. It is really fun to think about that we will just live for a little portion of time this universe have. Take a picture of a concert or maybe the Oscars, stare at it and think that by 2130 they are all dead, unless of course we invent something that extend our life span or maybe immortality. 2121 doesn’t even look that much far away because 1921 isn’t as far to me.

There was a time in the earth’s timeline, sometime, somewhere in 1921 or maybe 2021, a certain woman thinks she can do great things in this world but didn’t. A hundred years later, all that was remembered and recognized from her era was someone who discovered a cure for a certain illness, someone who painted a million dollar masterpiece, some hero who saved humanity, some very brave, important person. There was always that someone we barely knew, maybe they also wanted to be known but not everyone is blessed of a monument.
